Students attend Genetics Conference

Three Baldwin High School and two Baldwin Junior High School students went with extended learning teacher Pam Davis to the Sam Rhine Genetics Conference on Monday, Nov. 2, at Olathe South High School.

The students really liked the speaker Rhine.

“The speaker was good, he kept it informative but funny,” sophomore Carrie Deitz said.

The conference covered the latest development in genetic research and how it affects cancer and stem cell research.

“It was really fun and interesting,” Dietz said. “A lot of information thrown at you in a short period of time it was really fascinating to know the things we can do to help people.”

The lecture was four hours long, and it covered 20 pages of outlined material. Davis takes a group each year.

Red Ribbon Week at BJHS

Baldwin Junior High students were entertained Wednesday morning, October 28th by the special talents of Esmee Denters. Esmee is one of the first artists signed to Justin Timberlake’s Interscope imprint Tennman Records, but a mere two years ago, this Dutch 20-year old was a pancake house waitress with a webcam and a dream.

Esmee was 17 when she began posting videos of herself on YouTube which she recorded in the bedroom of her suburban home of Oosterbeek in the Netherlands.  When the videos were a hit and viewers started to make requests, Esmee was encouraged and began posting several clips a week, including songs she’d written herself.

Within nine months, Esmees’ videos had racked up 21 million views and the teenager became the No. 1 most-subscribed to Musician in the history of the popular video-sharing website.  Esmee shared with students the importance of not doing drugs or drinking alcohol if you expect to succeed. She told students when asked if she ever drank “No, I do not do drugs or alcohol!”
